On Saturday, 14 October 2017, the Pauline Cooperators of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Payneham, South Australia gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Pauline Cooperators.

My family association with the Pastorelle sisters began over thirty years ago when they established a ministry in our parish. During that time, we have come to know and love the sisters as our family and they are among some of our most respected and trusted friends. We have come to understand their ministry and appreciate their work within the parish. They are there in the daily grind in the joy in the pain.

They are the face of Jesus, their ministry is tangible you can see touch and feel it. It is a privilege to witness the example of strong dedicated faith filled women who give their lives to the service of others without counting the cost. When my husband and I were asked to join the Cooperators, it was easy to say yes. In recognition of being professed Cooperators were we given a special pin with the Stemma Paolino. I felt unworthy I had done nothing to receive this, yes I follow the sisters I draw life and strength from their ministry but what do I given back, not much.

The gathering on the Saturday afternoon was a special moment for us to reflect on our calling as Cooperators. Sr Estelita and Sr Anna led the reflection and they talked to us about our contribution and our how our parish community supports the mission of the sisters especially through the fundraising mission lunch, and how we participate in spiritual development. Sr Estelita helped us see that we are Cooperators in the everyday in being human, a smile, a listening ear, a warm embrace a kind word or action, being the face of Jesus to others. Simply being ourselves is powerful; there is joy, dignity and worth in simplicity.

The “stemma” insignia that the Cooperator wears as a symbol of his/her belonging to the Pauline Family was blessed by Fr Allan Winter, parish priest, blessed and distributed the to the Cooperators present.

The afternoon challenged me an reaffirmed that Jesus is the way, the truth and the light, this is our compass and this is what we witness through the Pastorelle ministry and what we are called to live as cooperators. The quote from Lesse James Alberione - “Per me, partendo da questo mondo prego ed offro la vita per la Famiglia Paolina, perché viva sempre secondo I disegni di sapienza e di amore di Dio, e a sua Gloria e pace degli uomini”. May we all embrace this desire in our lives.
