The YOUCAT Philippines together with the Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY) organized the National Pilgrimage of the Cross of Mercy throughout the country. Guided by the words of the Blessed Mother in her Magnificat: “For He has remembered His promise of Mercy” (Lk. 1:54) and in the light of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, this pilgrimage aims to be an opportunity for young people to discover and experience God’s merciful love.
The journey started on May 21, 2016 at Central Luzon Region, while on June 7-24 the Cross of Mercy will visit the Northern Luzon Region. The Diocese of San Fernando La Union was blessed to have been visited by the Cross of Mercy which came from the Diocese of Bangued-Abra last June 19, 2016.
A warm welcome was accorded to the Cross of Mercy with the youth coming from the Dioceses of Bangued-Abra, Vigan, La Union and guest youth from the Archdiocese of Manila. A touching faith-filled scenario happened when the convoy from Bangued-Abra entered the Province of La Union a group of youth from the parishes of the Holy Family Parish Sudipen, Holy Cross Parish Napaset, Luna and St. Christopher Parish, Bangar warmly welcomed the Cross with flaglets, tarpaulin and a PNP mobile car who accompanied the convoy from Sudipen to San Fernando La Union. As the Cross and the convoy passed along the national highway, in front of the above mentioned parishes, a lot of people were waiting young and old alike, some are crying waving their hands to the Cross a simple gesture of joy, of acknowledgment of one’s sinfulness begging for mercy while the Church’s bell rings and the drum and lyre are performing.
When the convoy with the Cross of Mercy finally arrived in San Fernando La Union, at the City proper another warm welcome took place with a large crowd both young and old with drum and lyre, a police mobile patrol car, a procession with the youth, the Knights of the Altar, a festive environment with colorful flags and flaglets. The procession proceeded to St. William the Hermit Cathedral Parish where the Acceptance Rite took place followed the celebration of the Welcome Mass.
At 8:00 pm the youth from the different parishes of the Diocese as well as the youth from the guest dioceses gathered for the Taize Prayer, animation of the theme song: “Echoes of Mercy” concluded the evening.
The following day, June 20 (Monday) at 8:30 am Send-Off Mass was held and at 9:30 am the Cross of Mercy was brought to the Diocese of Urdaneta.

This must have been a life-changing faith experience for all who took part in the event. It is moving to see many young people, and their companions, gathered around the Cross of Mercy, our unity and hope for the future. Well done, Sisters!
